Museum of North Craven Life
Located in The Folly, a striking Grade I listed 17th-century house close to Settle, the Museum of North Craven Life exhibits local history material relating to the area.
Nestled in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the museum showcases a collection of artefacts and exhibits that bring the region's past to life.
Local history
The museum's permanent exhibitions delve into various aspects of North Craven's history. The Parlour showcases the evolution of Settle's townscape, while the Parlour Chamber takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring how people have lived and worked in the area since prehistoric times.
Railway room
Train enthusiasts will find the top-floor of the museum of interest. The Settle-Carlisle Railway Room chronicles the construction of this iconic railway line and the lives of those who built and operated it.
Family fun
There are lots of fun activities to keep children of all ages entertained, including dressing up, objects to handle and a free-to-borrow Explorer Pack. There are also dedicated family-friendly activities throughout school holidays.
Cafe and shop
Enjoy a delicious drink, home baked cake or afternoon tea in the Coffee House, named Museum Cafe of the Year at the Museum and Heritage Awards in 2023. You can also buy hand-picked work by Yorkshire makers in the Artisans’ Gallery shop.

The Museum of North Craven Life was founded in 1976 by the Settle and District Civic Society, then chaired by author and playwright Alan Bennett.
