Located in the Grade II listed Town Hall, the Museum of Oxford is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of the city and its people.

The Museum has undergone a significant redevelopment, restoring its Victorian grandeur and reimagining how this city’s fascinating tales are told.

What to see at the Museum of Oxford

Two galleries show the changing story of Oxford, its places and people, from football to fairgrounds, marmalade to Morris Motors, patron saints to pubs, barges, bones and all types of quirky customs – there’s something for everyone.

Through objects, videos, audio and interactive displays, the exhibitions uncover what makes Oxford such a special place to live, work and study. It’s a great way for locals to explore their community stories, and for visitors to discover the city.

Don’t miss

Highlights include the grave slab of a Saxon princess and an Oxford marmalade tin found in Antarctica.

Tell me something I don’t know

As a museum devoted to telling the history of Oxford and its people, the museum strives to be led by its community and to be a home for their stories. They have a programme of temporary exhibitions showcasing local community heritage which are co-created with community groups, who carry out the research and drive the decision making and curatorial process.
