Explore 600 years of history at Powderham Castle, a fortified manor house set in a deer park just outside Exeter.
Built in the 14th century, Powderham Castle has been the home of the Courtenay family, Earls of Devon, for over six centuries. The house itself retains much of its medieval character, with alterations reflecting changing tastes and needs over the centuries.
Tour the Castle
There are regular guided tours of the impressive Castle rooms, where you can learn more about the Courtenay family. Alternatively you can explore the castle at your own pace.

The castle houses a remarkable collection of fine art, furniture, tapestries and ceramics, reflecting the Courtenay family's wealth and cultural patronage over the years.
Extensive grounds
From the formal walk around the Rose Garden, to the picturesque deer park, to the rugged hill climb up to the Belvedere Tower, there’s over 150 acres of outdoor space to explore.
Secret Garden pets corner
Powderham is home to a number of friendly animals including guinea pigs, donkeys, ponies, sheep and chickens. During the summer months you can walk goats and alpacas on trails around the estate, booking is required and children need to be over 12 and accompanied by an adult.

Explorer bags designed to help inquisitive minds explore the grounds are available from the Welcome Centre. From bug hunting to crafts there’s a range of activities to keep children engaged.
If one day is not enough to explore everything at Powderham, you can make as many return visits as you like within a week as tickets are valid for seven days.
