Topsham Museum
Celebrate the town's maritime history at Topsham Museum, a delightful 17th-century shipmaster's house on the Exe estuary.
The museum's primary focus is on Topsham's role as a significant port and shipbuilding centre. Explore exhibits that tell the story of the town's seafaring past, plus a surprising link to Hollywood.
Local history
See items excavated from Roman settlements around Topsham including glass, pottery, a quern stone, coins and personal ornaments. Find boats and models, tools and ropes that shed light on the town’s maritime history. There are also photographs and paintings of Topsham in the 19th century, and a doll’s house built at the end of 1800’s.
Merchant’s House
Step back in time and experience life as a merchant family by visiting the museum's beautifully preserved period rooms, including a dining room, an 18th century parlour, and 1930s kitchen. Discover furniture and other items, including a bible box and King James bible of 1726, an Edward Upjohn clock and a foot warmer.
Famous actress
The museum houses a collection of memorabilia related to Hollywood icon Vivien Leigh, including a nightdress worn by her in the filming of Gone with the Wind, theatrical paraphernalia, hats, muffs, photographs and even a theatre seat. The items were donated by the museum's founder Dorothy Holman, former sister-in -law of Leigh.
Cream tea
A visit to a museum in Devon wouldn’t be complete without a traditional cream tea. Enjoy one in the beautiful Riverside Garden or the Tea Room, and then maybe grab a special gift in the shop.
