Crowning a rocky outcrop near the town of Welshpool, Powis Castle is now run by the National Trust, which has ensured its place as a major attraction in Wales. Originally a 13th-century fortress, the castle evolved into a grand country house under the Herbert family's ownership from the 1570s onwards. Today visitors can explore its grand interiors adorned with tapestries, furniture and paintings.
World-famous gardens
With a history stretching back 300 years, the garden is a masterpiece of design, incorporating a variety of styles. Explore the dramatic Italianate terraces adorned with vibrant flower borders and towering yew hedges. Wander through the peaceful woodland area or admire the formal Edwardian garden bursting with roses and mature apple trees. Keep an eye out for the resident peacocks.
Visit the Clive Museum
Within the castle walls lies a collection amassed by two generations of the Clive family, the museum boasts over 1,000 objects from South and East Asia. Explore intricate ivories, beautiful textiles, and impressive weaponry, offering a glimpse into the cultural richness of the region.
Eating and shopping
Choose between the Garden Coffee Shop or the Courtyard Café for refreshments, and enjoy a traditional taste of Wales a slice of bara brith. The Courtyard shop sells a diverse range of locally produced goods and souvenirs, and the Garden Shop has everything for the outdoors, from garden furniture to sunhats, and even plants, many of which have been grown in the Nursery at Powis Castle.
