Southampton City Art Gallery's collection includes works by Old Masters, French Impressionists, and contemporary British art.

A must-visit for art enthusiasts in the South of England, this gallery houses an impressive collection of over 5,300 works of art spanning centuries of European art history, with a particular focus on 20th-Century British art.

Permanent collection

Explore a diverse range of works, from Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary art including pieces by Burne-Jones, Camden Town Group, and sculptures by Rodin and Epstein. Notable works include Allegretto di Nuzio’s Coronation of the Virgin, JMW Turner’s Fishermen upon a Lee Shore in Squally Weather and Claude Monet’s The Church at Vétheuil.

20th-Century art

The museum houses work by artists from the Camden Town and Bloomsbury Groups, and those connected to St Ives including Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Roger Hilton and Bryan Wynter. You can also explore an ever growing collection of contemporary artworks from artists such as Derek Jarman, Gilbert & George, Rachel Whiteread and Antony Gormley.

Exhibitions and activities

The gallery regularly hosts exciting exhibitions featuring both local and international artists and variety of creative workshops, talks, and tours for visitors of all ages.
