Housed on the site of a former produce market, the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh programmes exhibitions showcasing Scottish and international contemporary artists.

The Fruitmarket is a free, public space for culture in the heart of Edinburgh, providing inspiration and opportunity for artists and audiences.

Programming, developing and presenting world-class exhibitions, commissions, publications, performances, events and engagement activities, opening up the artistic process. Creativity makes space for meaning – the Fruitmarket creates a welcoming space for people to think with contemporary art and culture in ways that are helpful to them – for free.

The Fruitmarket has been a space for art since 1974, they reopened in 2021 after a redevelopment which saw the existing building improved the material finishes, improved access with a new lift, a new front door and many more toilets.  They also expanded next door, into another historic warehouse. Keeping this steel-framed, brick-lined building as raw as possible, opening it out by removing the upper floor and reusing the joists and floorboards rather than bringing in new materials. The Warehouse, now a joyously unexpected space for multi-artform creativity right in the centre of Edinburgh, bears witness to the history of the Fruitmarket’s buildings, a dark counterpart to the light and space embodied by the Galleries.
