Tudor House and Garden

Originally built in the late-15th century, this gorgeous timber-framed black and white Tudor house is an important part of Southampton’s heritage, providing a unique window into 800 years of history in the area.

Beautifully preserved and cared for, the atmosphere evokes the feeling of years gone by, providing insights into the house’s residents over the years. It is home to a number of curious artefacts, including a medieval jewel casket, a pair of 1920s shoes, a 19th-century penny farthing and a stunning collection of decorated glass panes. A particular gem in the collection is the Southampton Books of Hours – a tiny personal prayer book dating back to the 15th century. While the book is too fragile for permanent display, the museum has digitised some of the pages on a video projection display, bringing you closer to this charming work of art.

Families will have plenty to do here, as the museum holds several interactive displays and hosts a number of activities designed for children of all ages. Plus, curious sculpture buffs can look out for a unique collection of works dotted around the gardens – created by the artist Jacqueline Rolls and made from different types of willow, each of the four sculptures is inspired by the history of Tudor House.
