This is the only known work by Dora Carrington with Bedford as its subject. The Carrington family moved to Bedford in 1903 when Dora was ten. At that time, a large part of the townÂ’s population was made up of the families of retired soldiers or colonial administrators. Carrington drew Bedford Market on a rare trip home from the Slade a year after entering the school and it is drawn in the linear style that she developed there. The work depicts the market at the turn of the century in the location in which it is still held today. The Art Gallery has actively sought to form a small collection of important works by Dora Carrington including two other ArtFunded works, 'Mrs Box' in 2005 and 'Spanish Boy' in 2007.
