Bust of Philip Dormer of Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield

Peter Richard Hoare, 1740

© English Heritage Photo Library

Bust of Philip Dormer of Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773) depicted in this portrait at the height of his career around 1740. Hoare depicts him 'al antica', in part perhaps a compliment to his reputation for oratory and wit, and also a reflection of the influence on Hoare of the Flemish sculptor Peter Scheemakers, with whom he trained.
