Creamware teapot

W Greatbatch, 1777

The teapot is of lead-glazed cream-coloured earthenware decorated in red, black, green and yellow enamel in a style which can loosely be described as Chinoiserie. Chinese-inspired buildings form the main element of the decoration. On the front of the vessel two such buildings flank the inscription, in three lines, 'Green/Tea/I777'. The shoulder and cover of the teapot are decorated with bands of lattice-work interspersed with floral sprays.
