Monsieur D Lisant

Jacques Villon was the eldest of the Duchamp brothers, Marcel Duchamp and Raymond Duchamp-Villon, who were all artists in the forefront of the Parisian avant-garde. He studied engraving in Rouen and went to Paris in 1895 where he became a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec, making drawings for satirical papers such as Le Rire and L 'Assiette au Beurre. Although he did work in oils, Villon mainly concentrated on engraving until 1910. With his brothers he knew the poet Apollinaire and the Cubist painters, with whom his work of this period can be associated stylistically.
