Portrait of The Hon Mary Lowther
Godfried Schalken, 1660–1706

The sitter in this attractive portrait was the eldest daughter of Viscount Lonsdale and Catherine Thynne. Schalken established a considerable reputation for small genre subjects, usually shown by candlelight, and as a portrait painter. Encouraged by the success of Kneller, he visited England, where no doubt this portrait was painted but he met with little success, partly, it is said, because of his boorish manners.
