Two Juvenilia sketchbooks

Thomas Baines, c. 1830–1836

The two bound watercolour and sketch books represent the only known surviving examples of Baines art work produced prior to his travels to South Africa in 1842. The first sketchbook contains 84 marine subjects inlcuding sea battles and Lynn ships. The second sketchbook contains 142 drawings and watercolours of exotic animals and scenes of high adventure.
