Art Funded by you

Untitled # 12

Paul Chan, 2007

© The artist

Chan is proving himself to be a key emerging figure in contemporary drawing. This set of 7 untitled drawings comprise of charcoal and layers of black paper mounted onto blank sheets of music. They provide a visual link to the artist's best known work, 'The 7 Lights', particularly in their exploration of shadow and light. The blank musical score indicates an apprehension and a desire to read the pieces as music, but the shapes exceed the confinement of the lines, hinting at a loud, brash and dark soundtrack to accompany an apocalypse last light. As original works, the untitled works also address the idea of drawing as a way of thinking and approaching other disciplines like music. This collection was presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
