Art Funded by you

Untitled 1962

Gwyther Irwin, 1962

© The artist

Gwyther Irwin used the Meadow Studios in Bushey from 1955 until the late 1960s. The Meadow Studios were set up for Herkomer graduates in 1892 and they later became a focus of artistic activity in Bushey. Bushey Museum has work by many of the artists who occupied a Meadow Studio and Untitled is a valuable addition to that collection. Irwin spotted the creative potential of discarded London Transport posters, using the reverse (pasted) side in collage with its subtle staining as the surface. The posters were torn into strips and reassembled with a grid of the base colour inbetween. This work was acquired with the support of the Art Fund with the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
