Hastings Contemporary is an independent art gallery of modern and contemporary art by the sea.
The gallery is a key part of the vibrant artistic network of the south coast, presenting a broad range of works by historically important and internationally renowned artists, emerging practitioners, as well as exploring the rich cultural history of artists from the region.
Sitting next to the fishing beach in Hastings’ historic Old Town, the building’s design echoes its surroundings – 8,000 hand-glazed black tiles covering the exterior evoke the tarred boards of the nearby fishermen's net huts.
To date, the gallery (formerly Jerwood Gallery) has run two successful Art Happens crowdfunding campaigns. The first, in 2014, raised almost £30,000 to put on a major exhibition of work by the Chapman Brothers, while in 2017 they raised £14,000 to bring Paula Rego to the gallery for an exhibition of new work that celebrated her love of the sea.
