Peruvian artist Claudia Martínez Garay explores history, culture, and colonial legacies.
Claudia Martínez Garay's debut solo exhibition in Scotland features a mix of new and existing works. A Peruvian artist based in Amsterdam and Lima, Martínez Garay's diverse practice spans painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, and site-specific installations. Her sculptures often draw from pre-Columbian aesthetics, weaving in elements from the Incan civilization.
Through her art, she delves into how artefacts, propaganda, and cultural relics narrate the histories and socio-political memories of different cultures. By challenging colonialist frameworks and institutional narratives, Martínez Garay revitalises obscured stories and identities, illuminating the ties between preserved fragments and lost histories.
