Journey to India during a period of significant political and cultural change.
This landmark exhibition features works by over 30 Indian artists responding to cultural and political shifts from 1975 to 1998, a period of significant upheaval in India bookended by two significant events in the country’s history: Indira Gandhi's declaration of a state of emergency, and the Pokhran nuclear tests.
This was a period marked by economic collapse, rapid urbanisation and social upheaval, as is evidenced by the works exploring themes such as violence, caste, community, protest and religion. In spite of the period’s turbulence, however, artists continued to make work reflecting ordinary life: here, we also see work about friendship, love and desire.
