Discover the city's vanished green spaces.
Uncover the intriguing history of London’s vanished gardens. Did you know that Southwark once hosted a zoo, or that Britain’s first ecological park was briefly situated near Tower Bridge? Meanwhile, today, one of the capital’s most celebrated botanical gardens lies hidden beneath Waterloo station’s platforms.
Over the past five centuries, countless gardens have disappeared, from grand pleasure grounds and botanical gardens to allotments and eccentric private collections. Curated by landscape architect and historian Dr Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, this exhibition will explore this rich heritage and offer a glimpse into the diverse gardens that once graced the city.
