Discover how artists have captured and redefined northern England's landscapes for over 200 years.
The landscapes of northern England have long inspired artists, from the early Romantics to modern painters. Romance to Realities explores how depictions of these terrains – rural, urban, land, sea, and sky – have evolved over time, reflecting changes in society, industry, and identity.
From dramatic, picturesque scenes to the realities of labour and urbanisation, it highlights the human connection to place. Featuring works by John Knox, Alexander Nasmyth, John Martin, L.S. Lowry, Joan Eardley, and Anne Redpath, the exhibition offers a compelling journey through shifting artistic and cultural perspectives.
