Hopetown Darlington is the North East's newest visitor attraction. This 7.5 acre site encompasses a railway museum and heritage buildings to tell the story of the town's pioneering railway heritage to inspire innovators of the future.

Learn about local history

Darlington's railway heritage dates back to 1825, when the first passenger-carrying locomotive travelled along the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Hopetown Darlington combines unique heritage buildings, a railway museum, a live engineering site, and indoor and outdoor spaces to explore the town's industrial history.

Pop into the Stores to explore the museum's collection. From vehicles to ephemera, fashion to art, marvel at 30,000 objects, showcasing Darlington and the wider North East's railway history from 1825 until the end of the 20th century. For special exhibitions, step into the Grade II listed Carriage Works building.
