Knightshayes
With a National Art Pass you get
One of the finest surviving Gothic Revival houses, Knightshayes in Devon is a rare example of the work of the eccentric and inspired architect William Burges.
Knightshayes, near Tiverton is a National Trust property that offers a delightful combination of Victorian architecture, stunning gardens, and a glimpse into the life of a country gentleman. The house itself, designed by the architect William Burges, is a masterpiece of Gothic Revival. Burges was known for his eccentric and lavish designs, although Knightshayes stands as a tamer example of his work.
Grand interiors
The house is full of quirks and curiosities, from gargoyles and grotesques, to stone carvings and a ceiling inscribed with Robert Burns poetry. Built in 1869, the property was home to the wealthy Heathcoat-Amorys, who owned a lace factory in Tiverton. The interior design combines medieval romanticism with lavish Victorian decoration, with the rooms giving an atmospheric insight into grand country life.
Exquisite gardens
Knightshayes is renowned for its gardens, a masterpiece of architectural planting, and home to one of the most outstanding botanical collections in the country. From the formal Italianate terraces to the kitchen garden which was restored in 2001, there's something for everyone to explore.
Further afield
Beyond the house and gardens, Knightshayes offers a variety of activities for visitors. There are walking trails that wind through the estate, providing stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The National Trust also hosts events throughout the year, such as talks, workshops, and family activities. If all that leaves you feeling peckish, you can enjoy a delicious lunch in the Stables Café or take a picnic to enjoy in the picturesque grounds.
