Painshill
With a National Art Pass you get
Set in the Surrey countryside, Painshill is an elegant 18th-century landscape, featuring glorious views, surreal follies, a serpentine lake and historic plantings.
Created by Charles Hamilton as a ‘living painting,’ the park is considered a prime example of the English Landscape Movement. Wander through picturesque scenes, discover charming follies, and admire the beauty of nature.
Find follies and grottoes
Painshill is filled with delightful architectural follies, from the Gothic Temple to the mysterious Ruined Abbey. A hidden gem is the Crystal Grotto, a glittering naturalistic cave with shimmering, bubbling water, rough rock and stalactites covered in sparkling crystals.
Admire impressive trees
The park is home to the John Bartram Heritage Collection, a unique collection of North American trees and shrubs brought to England by botanist John Bartram. You can also see veteran English Oaks and the largest multi-stemmed cedar in Europe which was planted by Charles Hamilton in the 18th century.
Take a walk around the lake
Painshill's centerpiece is a 14-acre serpentine lake. Stroll along the banks, enjoy the tranquillity of the calming waters and spot wildlife such as swans, Egyptian Geese, herons and coots. Discover beautiful bridges and one of the largest working waterwheels in the UK.
Family-friendly day out
Families can enjoy exploring the grounds, spotting wildlife, or picnicking in the meadows. For those seeking a deeper appreciation, guided tours are available, delving into the history and design of the landscape. Look out for exciting outdoor music events in the grounds through the summer months.
