Curator Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews will be delving into the lives of emperors throughout the ages in his series ‘The Roman Empire from Caesar to collapse’. You can join us for one talk or sign up for all eight at once and enjoy a monthly jaunt around the Roman Empire. This is the first talk in the series!
Julius Caesar became sole ruler of the Roman state; in the aftermath of the Civil War following his assassination, his great-nephew Octavian established a dynastic system. The Augustan Settlement, as it is known, lasted until the suicide of his great-great-grandson Nero in AD 68. The chaos that followed was resolved when Vespasian’s victory led to the dynasty of the Flavian emperors, ending with the assassination of Domitian in AD 98.
